For many on the mainland, Hawaii is the ultimate honeymoon destination. Being in the islands allows a couple to participate in the three S’s of vacationing: surf, sun and shopping. All that shopping is the perfect way for a bridal couple to multitask by having fun while picking out thank you gifts for the bridal party. Gifts with island spirit have more cachet to them than a silver-plated money clip. And a gift from Hawaii is the perfect way to say mahalo.
One of the most unusual offerings to come from Hawaii are postcards made from coconuts. Called coco-notes, these whole, unhusked coconuts are hand painted with scenes from Hawaii on one side. The other side has room for postage and a personalized note. Best of all, these coco-notes are ready to ship without needing a box.
There’s nothing more traditionally Hawaiian than the Aloha shirt. To ensure quality, look for labels that say “made in Hawaii.” According to Cheryl Farr Leas, author of “Hawaii for Dummies,” the other markers of a top quality aloha wear include patterns that match at the seams. The pockets and buttons may be hand carved out of coconut.
Pineapples in Hawaii taste different than the fruit that you find in your local supermarket. The rich, volcanic soil allows most fruit in the islands to grow sweeter and extra flavorful. Many companies, including the Maui Pineapple company, offer crates of pineapples and papayas that have been specially fumigated for fruit flies and then packed so that you can check them as luggage for the flight home. You can even arrange for them to meet you at the airport with the fruit, so that you don’t have to mind it through your vacation.
