Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is anything but tranquil. Lively nightclubs, packed beaches, live music, extravagant dinner theaters and elaborately designed miniature golf courses compete for attention from the thousands of visitors who flock to the coastline every year. Somewhere in the midst of it all, local breweries have slipped into the limelight with handcrafted concoctions that bring an authentic feel to the mishmash of tourist attractions dotting the Grand Strand region along the waterfront. Several offer brewery tours and tastings that are open to the public.
Myrtle Beach is famous for its waterfront strip.
New South Brewing Company
The widely acclaimed New South Brewing Company (newsouthbrewing.com) launched in 1998 as one of the region’s growing collection of microbreweries, touting a slogan of “Hand Crafted, Hand Canned & Hands On.” Beer aficionados can tour the award-winning brewery on Campbell Street and taste its signature porters, ales or lagers on select days and hours throughout the year. Samples are free and the tour lasts for 30 minutes, covering the process of making beer and the ingredients used. Seasonal selections are featured from August through March, including Oktoberfest in the autumn and Dark Star in the winter. Pick up some beer gear, T-shirts, growlers or a six-pack to take home.
Gordon Biersch Brewing Company
Located within the Market Common lifestyle center near the Myrtle Beach International Airport, the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company (gordonbiersch.com) features authentic German-style beers brewed on-site by the standards of Reinheitsgebot, the ages-old German Purity Law of beer. Among the ingredients is a special yeast strain imported from Germany. Tours of the brewery are available on request when visiting the restaurant during regular operating hours. Seasonal beers are released with a tapping party that is open to the public, with samplings of the new release and paired menu items.
Liberty Steakhouse & Brewery
The Liberty Steakhouse & Brewery (libertysteakhouseandbrewery.com) is right at home in the Broadway at the Beach dining and entertainment complex on Celebrity Circle. Using the handcrafted brewing style that is gaining popularity in the region, the brew-master creates specialties such as the Rocket Red Ale and Miss Liberty Lager, which can be paired with steaks and seafood at the restaurant. Tours provide insight into the custom brewing procedures and offer a free sample of a signature brew or seasonal selection. Check with the brewery for scheduled tour times, generally held one evening a month.
The city of Myrtle Beach, a major tourist destination, lies on the east coast of the United States along 60 miles of coastline known as the Grand Strand, separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway. Air travelers arrive at the Myrtle Beach International Airport, less than two miles from the city center and the beaches. Most of the activity at Myrtle Beach is centered along North and South Ocean Boulevard. All three brewery tours are within a short drive of the Grand Strand.
